Climate Active Certification

Climate Active certification provides a recognised pathway for organisations to demonstrate carbon neutrality across organisation, product, service and event categories. We support organisations throughout the certification process, from organisational footprint assessment and emissions reduction planning through to offsetting, disclosure preparation and certification submission. Our approach helps organisations navigate Climate Active requirements while building a clear understanding of emissions performance and opportunities for ongoing improvement.

Climate Active Certification Pathways

Climate Active certification is available across several pathways, allowing organisations to certify carbon neutrality at different levels. The most suitable pathway depends on organisational objectives, stakeholder expectations and the scope of certification.

  • Organisation: Covers the full organisational footprint.
  • Product: Applies to specific products or product lines.
  • Service: Covers defined services or offerings.
  • Event: Applies to individual events or activities.
  • Precincts: The operations of a precinct.

Our team helps organisations determine the most appropriate pathway and manage the certification process from initial assessment through to submission.

Benefits of Climate Active Certification

Climate Active certification demonstrates a commitment to measuring, reducing and offsetting greenhouse gas emissions through an Australian Government-backed framework. Certification provides a transparent approach to carbon neutrality, helping organisations reduce the risk of greenwashing and demonstrate climate action through a recognised framework.

Certification Delivery and Support

We provide practical support across each stage of the Climate Active certification process. Having worked with more than half of successful Climate Active participants, we bring extensive experience in greenhouse gas accounting, emissions reduction planning and certification delivery.

The process begins with quantifying greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with Climate Active requirements, including Scope 1, Scope 2 and relevant Scope 3 emissions. This establishes a clear carbon footprint and provides a baseline for certification and emissions reduction planning.

From there, we prepare Climate Active disclosures and supporting documentation, including the Public Disclosure Statement, and manage the submission process through to review. We also help organisations identify and prioritise emissions reduction opportunities that support certification requirements while reducing reliance on offsets over time.

Technical Assessments

Organisations require technical assessments to address matters such as organisational boundaries, data quality and methodology selection. These are required at initial certification and every three years thereafter and may also be required where there are material changes, such as organisational mergers or methodological variations. This helps ensure calculations and assumptions remain appropriate and aligned with Climate Active requirements. Technical Assessments need to be conducted by a Registered Consultant.

Third-Party Verification

We support organisations through the independent verification process by preparing documentation, coordinating with verification bodies and responding to technical queries. We engage with verification bodies to ensure alignment with relevant ISO standards for the selected certification pathway and can also undertake Type 1 verification where applicable. This helps organisations navigate the verification process and meet Climate Active requirements efficiently.

Offsetting

Residual emissions are neutralised through eligible carbon offsets in accordance with Climate Active requirements. Working closely with our sister company, Viridios Capital, we help organisations develop offset strategies that align with certification requirements and broader sustainability objectives. This helps organisations select offsets that align with Climate Active requirements and support credible carbon neutrality claims.

Pangolin Associates was instrumental in helping Capital Brewing Co calculate our scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, allowing us to become the first fully certified brewery and beer in Australia. Pangolin’s in-depth knowledge of carbon accounting allowed us to calculate the footprint of the entire organisation and all our products including upstream and downstream emissions. This gives our customers confidence in knowing they can enjoy an ice cold beer without warming the planet!
